For many people in life there are turning points that
cause drastic changes in their career; my turning point is when I had my first child. Having a child changed my whole pespective
in life. This newborn child now became my responsibility to love, care, nurture, and provide the best education I can. I strongly
believe that the mother is the first educator of their children and it is through the mother's behavior and values that children
are greatly influenced. I believe that if a mother be educated, she can pass on whatever knowledge she has to her children.
Several years later, I had my second child. It was always an issue where the children would go for day care or for their elementary
years. As a parent, you want to give your children the best education there is. It was only when we moved to China that I
started home-schooling my children. It is from this experience that made me realize the dedication, love, and understanding
that teachers need for their students. This experience inspired me to become a teacher and to make a difference in a child's
life.
Knowing how important education is for children during the early years is the main reason why I want to be a
teacher. I believe children have "gems" within, and as teachers we must search in each one of our students to find their talents
and foster their development. As one of the quotes from a holy writing say, "Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable
value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom."
I would like
to be a teacher for early childhood or elementary because these are critical years for child development. In these early years,
a child will develop his or her personality, character, virtues, and the foundation for future learning. I believe that a
lot of the problems in the later years of schooling can be prevented if the proper attention and educational "nourishment"
is given in the early years of education. I would like to be the kind of teacher that helps children establish positive characters
and virtues that will help them in their social and moral development. Many of the violence in our schools today can be prevented
by teaching children at an early age how to resolve problems without aggression; therefore we must teach children to be problem
solvers and peace makers at an early age.
Moral education is essential, and equally important is establishing a strong
foundation in the knowledge and skills of the arts and sciences. I had once read, "Children are like tender plants, they will
grow in whatever way you train it." In this respect, teachers must be nurturing to their young students in the same way a
gardener tends to his saplings. Children need to feel that they are loved, respected, and cared for. Teachers must be an exemplar
to our children. As a teacher, I would give them as much encouragement and praise as needed so that they would build confidence
in themselves and have a positive attitude towards learning, others, and the world.
