Assistive Technology Assessment

Technology has changed all of our lives, but for people with disabilities technology has truly changed their lives and opportunities that they will have in the future. As teachers, we need to be aware of technologies that are available for our students with disabilities. We need to familiarize ourselves with the different assistive technology tools and which ones are appropriate for students with different disabilities.

As a teacher, I will revise my lesson plan for the students with disabilities to use technology. They can use the technology to express themselves if they are having difficulty with speech. If I recognize that a student has a problem with reading, I can use an assistive technology tool that enhances student learning in reading. As the video clip had mentioned, the earlier children are introduced to technology, the quicker they master the technology and the better prepared they are in applying technology to the lessons in the classroom.

I have learned from this lesson that there are many assistive technology tools that are available for students with disabilities. Teachers must find ways to make these tools available for their students whether they push for allocation of funds within their school's budget, find grants, or raise money. For many students with disabilities, technology is the key to pursuing their passion. For teachers, this will be a great challenge to facilitate in the learning of future world inventors, scientists, artists, musicians, and possibly even athletes. Technology is their life.
